Day 1: Reykjavik

Arrive at Keflavik International Airport and check in at your hotel in Reykjavik. Take an easy and relaxing day in town. Do try one of the comfortable thermal swimming pools which are open all year, or take a walk downtown Reykjavik. Depending on the arrival time of your flight, you may visit the Blue Lagoon Geothermal Spa, which is near the airport, before you check in at your hotel, or you could leave the Blue Lagoon for your final day.

 

Day 2: Reykjavik-Snaefellsjokul

Pass through the tunnel at Hvalfjordur fjord to West Iceland and to the village Borgarnes. You will drive pass the magnificent Eldborg crater on route to Snaefellsnes peninsula. Hike up to the crater before you continue to Hnappadalur where you can enjoy bathing. Then visit Snaefellsjokull central volcano. Overnight near Snaefellsjokull

 

Day 3: Snaefellsjokul-Stykkisholmur

Look around at Arnarstapi and Hellnar and other natural wonders on the Snaefellsnes peninsula. Snaefellsjokull national park. It is also recommended that you stop at Londrangar, Purkholahraun and Djupalonssandur. Head to Stykkisholmur. Overnight in Stykkisholmur.

 

Day 4: Reykjavik

Enjoy Stykkisholmur, little town with beautiful surroundings with old houses, museums and a peaceful harbour. Take a boat tour and sail among the islands where in the summer you would see the thriving bird life. From Stykkisholmur your route takes you back towards Borgarnes and from there to the historic sites of Reykholt, Hraunfossar Waterfall, Barnafoss Waterfall and Deildartunguhver which is the most powerful hot spring in Europe. Head towards Hvalfjordur (Whale Fjord) taking the road around Hvalfjordur and then on to Reykjavik. Your accommodation for the night will be arranged in the Reykjavik area.

Day 5

Proceed from Reykjavik to Thingvellir(Þingvellir) National Park. Enjoy the landscape, the history and the wonders of nature in this place where the tectonic plates of America and Europe meet and the rift valley is clearly visible. From here the route takes you to Geysir Geothermal Field where there are hundreds of hot springs, the old Great Geysir and the very active geysir Strokkur among all the others. From Geysir Geothermal Field you need to drive to Gullfoss Waterfall and then on to Skalholt and to the villages Hella and Hvolsvollur. Your accommodation for the night will be arranged in the area surrounding Hella and Hvolsvollur. Try  snorkeling under the midnight sun.

 

Day 6

South coast of Iceland. After breakfast you have the chance to visit the Saga Museum at Hvolsvollur. Your tour route will then take you to Fljotshlid, where you will have a very good view to Eyjafjallajokull central volcano, other central volcanos and also the glaciers here. You will then need to drive to visit Seljalandsfoss Waterfall and Skogafoss Waterfall. At Skogar you could also visit an interesting folk museum. Next is a visit to the Solheimajokull glacier where you could take a snowmobile tour if you want to.

From here your tour takes you to Dyrholaey and to Reynisfjara beach and then on to the village of Vik. From Vik you need to follow the road which crosses Myrdalssandur sand giving you a view up to the volcano Katla which is sleeping nicely under the Myrdalsjokull glacier. This part of the tour requires you to drive over some glacier rivers and across the Eldgjarhraun lava field which is the biggest lava field in the world formed in historic times (19 cubic meters).

Next you will enjoy driving over to Eldhraun which is the second biggest lava field formed in historic times in the world (13 cubic metres). Your final stop of the day is at the village of Kirkjubaejarklaustur which is surrounded by a very interesting landscape. The natural pavement of basalt, called Kirkjugolf which means church floor is well worth taking a look at. Your accommodation will be arranged in Kirkjubaejarklaustur or its surrounding area.

 

Day 7

Today your journey takes you in an Easterly direction to Foss a Sidu (a waterfall), to Dverghamrar and then on to Skeidararsandur. Here you will enjoy driving over big glacial rivers and a good view up to Vatnajokull glacier together with Hvannadalshnukur, Iceland’s highest peak and other glaciers here. You could hike in Skaftafell, or take a guided glacier hiking tour; a walk to the edge of Skaftafellsjokull glacier with great views over both the Skaftafellsjokull and Svinafellsjokull glaciers.

Next your tour will take you to Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon where you could take a boat trip and sail between the icebergs. Your accommodation will again be arranged in Kirkjubaejarklaustur or its surrounding area.

 

Day 8

From Kirkjubaejarklaustur your route will take you west back to Reykjavik with stops here and there according to your own wishes. If you have time you could do some sightseeing and/or shopping in Reykjavik, or try out a local restaurant. Your accommodation will be arranged in Iceland’s pristine capital, Reykjavik.

 

Day 9

If your flight schedule allows, you could use this day to head for the famous Blue Lagoon Geothermal Spa, where you could relax for some time. Or, if you visited the Blue Lagoon on Day 1, you could visit Reykjavik with its many possibilities. If you have chosen to leave your car in Reykjavik we will pick you up at your hotel or guest house and transport you to the airport or blue lagoon, getting you to the airport in good time for your return flight.
